Kumbakonam is surrounded by temples in all the four directions. Each and every street has deities. The biggest temple in Kumbakonam is ‘Kumbeshwarar Temple’ whose primary Lord is Adi Kumbeshwarar(Lord Shiva) and his consort is Mangalambika(Lord Parvati Devi). Kumbakonam is very famous for Mahamaham festival which is celebrated once in twelve years during the tamil month ‘Maasi’. Mahamam tank is available in the heart ofKumbakonam town. The water flowing in Mahamam tank is sacred water which comes from the rivers such as Ganges, Yamuna, Saraswathi, Sarayu, godhavari, Mahanandi, Narmada, Pavoshni, Kaveri. People come from nook and corner of the world to take holy bath in the mahamam tank to wash off the sins and to make us pure from evils.
